Pinpointing purpose. Keeping promises.

You’ve got to know who you really are to make a connection. You’ve also got to be able to articulate it in a way that will make other people give a s**t. I’ve spent the past two decades bridging that gap, a journey that’s taken me from major league clubhouses to the halls of scientific research to an iconic agency brand.

The straight dope

So what am I actually spending most of my (professional) life doing? Well, mostly I’m leading teams that figure out how to link a few core truths about a brand to materials and systems where those truths come to life just about anywhere they need to.

Brand Identity & Design

From ambassadorship to stewardship - from the big idea to a crisply designed business card - I lead teams responsible for the rules and the tools that express a core identity meaningfully and authentically.

Product & Technology

Telling your brand story means having the right portfolio of digital products in place, so it can be told well. I guide the creation and ceaseless refinement of platforms so they can deliver value and grow.

Customer Experience

An elegantly simple brand identity and sophisticated digital products aren’t worth anything if you can’t deliver. I absolutely love building and nurturing teams that execute, no matter the story or setting.

My why

What stories do you love? Why? The red thread from my days as a journalism major and young baseball writer all the way up to the present is my fascination with those two questions. I love a good story, and, thanks to my background and my curiosity, I’ve gotten to tell some special ones over the years. If I’m lucky, I’ll get to keep doing it for many more.

My answer to those questions? It’s something like this: you have to have the instincts for a good story. That means being able to recognize when something is novel. But instincts have to come with craft - with the ability to distill and synthesize in a way that connects. And connection - to an idea, to the people who express it and the people who absorb it - is what gets me out of bed every day.

Oh, the places I’ve been

  • At Merkle, I’ve served in multiple roles and earned four promotions at the company as it has has grown 7x in size and expanded from the U.S. market to more than 30 around the world.

I’ve led two rebranding efforts during that time, developing comprehensive brand guidelines and a corresponding design system. In parallel, I’ve built creative services and digital teams from the ground up, going from a team of two to 20-plus in a handful of years.

I’ve led the effort to scale our website to 15 markets and six languages, increasing traffic 689% during my time at Merkle, driving an average of $50M in annual revenue

I continue to spearhead ongoing brand rationalization efforts and have led 15+ marketing technology implementations and integrations, including marketing automation (Pardot), content management (Drupal, Wordpress, Adobe Experience Manager), analytics (Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics), conversion rate optimization and personalization (Google Optimize, Adobe Target), and applicant tracking systems (SmartRecruiters)

  • At ASCO, I managed the content migration of a portfolio of sites to a new content management system (Drupal).

I formulated wireframes and technical specifications for key site assets, using analytics, conducting usability testing, and relying on user-centered design best practices to inform the structure and approach to the new sites.

I also managed the day-to-day operations of the portfolio of sites that were redesigned and replatformed, and wrote and published articles for various Society publications.

  • As a writer and lead Major League Baseball editor, I developed and executed a comprehensive content plan for national MLB coverage, managing a year-round editorial calendar and the assignments of 10+ writers

During my time there, I also wrote 780 bylined stories (almost 700,000 words), including: live ballpark coverage, exclusive interviews, opinion, and analysis.
